International Women’s Day (IWD) is more than just a celebration—it’s a call to action. Every year, we recognize the achievements of women across industries while acknowledging the work that still lies ahead to achieve gender equality.

As a certified Women’s Business Enterprise (WBE), Federal International has women at the helm and throughout varying levels of the company who drive our success, break barriers, and shape the future of our industry.

The 2025 IWD theme, “Accelerate Action,” is a challenge for all of us —to champion inclusion, advocate for progress, and create opportunities for women at every level. This International Women’s Day, we spotlight the incredible women who inspire us and embody the spirit of action. Their stories remind us that when we invest in women, we invest in a stronger, more equitable future for all.

Women Leading the Way at Federal International

Chrissy Wingbermuehle, Director of Marketing

Building a Marketing Department from the ground up might seem intimidating to some, but for Chrissy Wingbermuehle, it was an exciting challenge. Since the winter of 2021, Chrissy has served as Federal International’s Director of Marketing, overseeing the marketing strategies for Federal International and its family of business units, Federal Eco Foam, Federal Recycling, and Federal Foam Technologies.

“The blank slate was what drew me in,” Chrissy shared. “I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity to bring a unified marketing strategy to the company.”

She plays a key role in internal communications, ensuring alignment with the company’s overarching vision and fostering a cohesive understanding across all levels.

Working at a Women-Owned Business

One of the most exciting aspects of joining Federal International was the opportunity to work with Claire Newton, the company’s first female President & CEO. For Chrissy, seeing a woman in such a high-ranking position and on the Board of Directors—especially in a male-dominated industry—was inspiring and empowering.

In addition, Chrissy is especially proud of Federal International’s Women’s Business Enterprise (WBE) certification. This status, given by the Women’s Business Development Center (WBDC) Midwest, recognizes businesses that are 51% owned and operated by women. For Chrissy, this certification represents Federal International’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and empowering women in leadership. She sees it as a steppingstone for greater opportunities, fostering a workplace where women can thrive, lead, and drive meaningful change in the industry.

“It’s so encouraging to see women in ownership and a part of the Executive Team, leading the company’s decisions and strategies,” Chrissy remarked. “We have a seat at the table, and it’s so well-deserved.”

How Chrissy Accelerates Action through the One Federal Vision

Chrissy accelerates action by spearheading initiatives for Federal International’s marketing strategies and company culture, including brand visibility, fostering cross-collaboration between business units, and aligning marketing efforts with Federal International’s One Federal vision. She serves as an example of an influential female leader with visibility and impact across the entire company who has not only built a robust marketing function but also empowered teams to embrace innovation and new opportunities for collaboration across the organization.

“There is still so much room for growth in how we go to market as a total company and the ways we can cross-sell solutions and services with our business units,” Chrissy said. “I’m excited for the continuing challenge and finding ways to further bring our One Federal vision to life in the marketplace and with improved internal communication strategies.”

Kirsten Barton, Marketing Specialist

Kirsten Barton’s career path wasn’t always clear-cut. As a freshman at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale (SIUC), she was undeclared before mentors guided her toward a degree in Communications with a focus on Public Relations. “I’ve always enjoyed storytelling and understanding how people communicate,” she shared. Her love of digital marketing also led her to pursue Digital Marketing Certified Associate (DMCA) certification from Duke University.

After four years in digital and affiliate marketing, she decided to look for a new role in which she could expand her marketing expertise. Kirsten was attracted to Federal International and the opportunity to help develop a strong foundation for its Marketing department and the marketing strategy across the parent company and its business units. Additionally, the company’s footprint in the circular economy, recycling and sustainability was also a bonus.

The Impact of Senior Women Leaders on Aspiring Female Professionals

Kirsten acknowledges the progress being made for women, noting female leaders like Claire Newton, President of Federal International, and Kendra Kemp, VP of Operations for business unit Federal Recycling, and the trust placed in their expertise. “It’s inspiring to see more women in positions of influence and power, and the way they are driving our company’s success.”

For women starting their careers, Kirsten emphasizes the importance of confident communication. “Avoid phrases like ‘I just think…’ —They can unintentionally undermine your confidence,” she advises. “And don’t be afraid to add your own unique touch to your work.”

She also believes companies can better support women by fostering visibility and mentorship opportunities. “Providing exposure to senior women leaders and creating spaces for collaboration allows the next generation of women in business to develop and grow.”

How Kirsten Accelerates Action through the One Federal Vision

When it comes to accelerating action at Federal International, Kirsten is excited about bridging gaps across business units and fostering a more connected, inclusive workplace in alignment with Federal International’s One Federal vision.

“I see an opportunity through my cross-functional role to help build upon our One Federal vision and make an impact on a greater level as an aspiring, up-and-coming female leader in our organization. I’m working on an internal digital communications project to promote more awareness among employees about all our companies, their operations, successes and growth initiatives.”
